NP3 EN GRONINGER MUSEUM MAKEN KANDIDATEN YOUNG GRUNN ARTIST III BEKEND Na een spannende eerste selectieronde kozen NP3 en het Groninger Museum uit de meer dan 45 inzendingen de drie nieuwe kandidaten voorhet YGA III traject. Jurjen Galema, Susanna Inglada en Marit Westerhuis starten in september 2019 met het eenjarige talentontwikkelingstrajecten maken daarmee kans op een grote solo tentoonstelling in het Groninger Museum.
Jurjen Galema is net afgestudeerd aan het Frank Mohr Institute, Master of Arts in Fine Art and Design in Groningen en is parttime drag queen. Afkomstig uit een klein plaatsje in Friesland, leek de kunstwereld ooit ver verwijderd. Met zijn soft sculptures wil hij een brug slaan door werelden tecreëren die bevolkt worden door buitenissige figuren met intrigerende verhalen. Gender, identiteit, kitsch, populaire cultuur en obsessies zijn thema’s die hij onderzoekt en op geheel eigen wijze vertolkt.
Susanna Inglada, ook een alumna van het Frank Mohr Institute, vindt inspiratie in de Spaanse en Catalaanse politieke geschiedenis die zij veelalziet in termen van geweld en machtsstrijd. Zij verzamelt beelden via internet en tijdschriften die zij verwerkt tot grote zwart-wit tekeningen. Door detekeningen vrij in de ruimte te plaatsen ontstaat een kruising tussen een theatrale enscenering en een diorama, waarbij de bezoeker zich getuigewaant van een raadselachtig psychologisch strijdtoneel.
Marit Westerhuis is momenteel bezig met de afronding van haar tweejarige werkperiode aan de Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam.Met haar afstudeerwerk voor het Frank Mohr Institute drie jaar geleden, met als onderwerp ‘the quantified self’, onderwierp zij zichzelf aan een radicaalregime van onderzoeken. Zij put uit onderzoek naar bewustzijn en robotica en met een fascinatie voor technologie en het menselijk lichaam, richt zij zichop mens-machine thematiek en transhumanisme.
YGA III – het traject
Het YGA-traject is een bijzonder samenwerkingsproject tussen NP3 en het Groninger Museum en is een aanvulling op de bestaande beroepspraktijk van de drie geselecteerde kunstenaars. Met de nodige professionele ondersteuning bieden NP3 en het Groninger Museum de kunstenaars een unieke kans om de volgende grote stap in hun carrière te maken, hun kunstenaarschap aan te scherpen, te verdiepen en naar een hoger niveau te tillen. Een belangrijk element van het traject is het werken aan een tentoonstellingsvoorstel met nieuw werk voor in het Groninger Museum. De definitieve selectie voor de tentoonstelling in het Groninger Museum vindt plaats op basis van de ontwikkelingen van de kunstenaar in het YGA-traject én het tentoonstellingsvoorstel.

NP3 AND GRONINGER MUSEUM REVEAL YOUNG GRUNN ARTIST III CANDIDATES
After an exciting initial selection round, NP3 and the Groninger Museum have chosen three new candidates for the Young Grunn Artist (YGA) III programmeout of more than 45 entrants. In September 2019, Jurjen Galema, Susanna Inglada and Marit Westerhuis will start the one-year talent development programme – and one of them will ultimately win a large solo exhibition in the Groninger Museum.
Jurjen Galema recently graduated from the Frank Mohr Institute with an MA in fine art and design and is a part-time drag queen. When he was growing upin a small town in Friesland, the art world seemed far away. With his soft sculptures, he aims to build bridges by creating worlds populated by eccentric, extravagant figures with intriguing backstories. Gender, identity, kitsch, popular culture and obsessions are themes he investigates and expresses in his own unique way.
Susanna Inglada, also an alumna of the Frank Mohr Institute, finds inspiration in Spanish and Catalan political history, which she often views in terms ofviolence and the abuse of power. She collects images from the Internet and magazines and processes them into large black-and-white drawings. Placingthe drawings in the exhibition space creates a hybrid between a theatrical staging and a diorama, in which the spectator becomes part of an enigmatic psychological battle scene.
Marit Westerhuis is completing a two-year residency at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam. For her degree project at the Frank Mohr Institute three years ago on the subject of “the quantified self”, she subjected herself to a radical regime of investigations.Her work draws on research into consciousness and robotics. Fascinated by technology and the human body, she focuses on human-machine themes and transhumanism.
YGA III programme
Each Young Grunn Artist programme is a unique collaboration between NP3 and the Groninger Museum and supplements the existing professional practiceof the three selected artists. By providing necessary support, NP3 and the Groninger Museum offer the artists a unique opportunity to take a major step forward in their careers, sharpening and deepening their practice in order to take it to a higher level. An important element of the programme is the formulation of aproposal for an exhibition of new work. One artist is ultimately chosen for a solo show in the Groninger Museum on the basis of his or her development in the YGA programme and the exhibition proposal.
